The quantity surveyor a history in UK construction industry is a unique , complex and often fragmented industry. Nevertheless , in 2008 the total turnover of the industry was 80 billion poundsterling or the equivalent of 6 % of the UK gross domestic product , making it an important contributor to the wealth of the nation .

The industry employees approximately 182.000 contractors , 1.8 million peolpe a high percentage of which are self - employed with a ratio of male to female of 7 : 1 . The construction industry is defined in accordance with division 45 of revised 2003 standart calssification .

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors ( RICS )

The RICS was founded in 1868 and today there are approximately 130.000 members operating in over 140 countries of which approximately 35.000 are quantity surveyors .

Design and cost 

The design of building can have a major impact on costs . These design factors can be grouped as follows : plan shape , heigh and number of storeys , orientatioin and footprint , choice of elements / materials .

Bills of Quantities 

Bill of Quantities shall fully describe and accurately represent the quantity and quality of the works to be measured shall be given as a provisional sum . Work the extent of which is not known shall be described as provisional or given in a bill of approximate quantities .

Rules of measurement adopted for work not covered by these rules shall be stated and such rules shall as far as posibble conform with those given in this document for similiar work .

Measurement 

Unless the term metre used un this document is preceded by the works square of cubic it shall be deemed to be linear .

Unless otherwise stated , works , shall be measured net as fixed in position and each measurement shall be taken to the nearest 10mm ( i.e. 5mm and over shall be regarded as 10mm and less than 5mm shall be disregarded ) . This rule shall not apply to any dimensions stated in descriptioins .

Unless otherwise stated , where minimum deductions of voids are dealt with in this document they shall refer only to openings or wants which within the boundaries of measured areas. Openings or wants which are the boundaries of measured areas shall always be the subject of decution irrespective of size .

The use of hypen between two dimensions in this document or in a bill of quantities shall mean a range of dimensions exceeding the first dimension stated but not exceeding the second .

Provisional of prime cost sums 

Where this document requires provisional or prime cost sums to be given in accordance with clause , the choice of terms shall be made in comformity with the following definitions unless otherwise provided in the conditions of contract .

The term " provisional sum " is defined as a sum provided for work or services to be executed by a nominated sub - contractor , a goverment or statutory authority or for materials or goods to be obatined from a nominated supplier . SUch sum shall be deemed to be exclusive of any profit required and/or attendance to be provided by the main contractor and provision shall be made for the addition thereof where applicable .

Cost quantity surveyors contract 

The cost of quantity surveyors for pre and post contract is approximately 5% from the total cost
